    Model Types

The Vaneo was a five-door compact MPV built from 2002 to 2005. It was based on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, but offering a lot more storage space and an optional third row of seats for the total of seven, the last two being large enough for children only. There were three engine sizes – 1.6L petrol, 1.9L petrol and 1.7L diesel, the first one and the diesel having two power ratings.

There are also three transmission options, all of them with five speeds. A manual was standard, while an automatic named “TouchShift” and ACS semi-automatic with automated clutch came as optional features.

None of the cars were very sporty, which is understandable when we take their real purpose into account. The fastest one was the 1.9L petrol with 123 horsepower which reached 62 miles an hour in 10.7 seconds and had the top speed of 130 miles per hour with manual transmission, or ACS. The diesel was slower but it offered the same amount of torque as the most powerful petrol version, and came with a lot better fuel efficiency.

The Sandwich Floor design increased safety while at the same time providing higher driving position, while its sliding doors, optional slide-out boot floor with 120kg of capacity and the maximum of 3,000L of cargo space made it extremely versatile.

    Trim Lines & Engines

The standard one comes with front and side air bags, ESP, ABS, traction control, alarm, immobiliser, ISOfix, CD, electric mirrors, folding rear seats, front and rear electric windows, fog lights, heated mirrors, PAS, remote locking and service indicators.

Trend trim line added roof rails, while Ambiente was the highest level and its standard features included things like air conditioning and alloy wheels.

Aside from these trim levels there were also many optional features which you could use to customize your car including a third row of seats, slide-out boot floor and a huge number of other additions.

    Model History

There is not much history behind the Vaneo. We may consider the initial A-Class model its predecessor due to the fact that the Vaneo was built on the same platform, but it was the first model of its kind for Mercedes. Coming several years after the A-Class, it was spared from the teething problems of the initial model.

RHD models came to the UK in May 2002 and with the starting price of £14,500, it was not exactly cheap for a car of its class. However, going for lots of optional features might make it a lot more appealing, but also more expensive.

There was no facelift and the car was short-lived, being replaced by the Citan in 2005.
