The R171 SLK-Class came in 2004 replacing the first one of its kind – the R170. Its styling was more aggressive, the suspension was sportier, the materials better and the AMG engine options increased in displacement as well, not that the 3.2 AMG V6 from the previous model lacked push.

All of the cars were petrol-fuelled RWD, two-door, hard top roadsters. Altogether, there were four engine sizes, but eight different engines after the facelift came in 2008. The powertrain line-up ranged from a 1.8L supercharged unit in the SLK200 Kompressor which boasted 161hp, all the way up to the 5.4L V8 from the 2006 SLK 55 AMG Black Series with a whopping 390hp in such a small car.

The facelift came in early 2008 bringing only subtle styling changes, with a new, sharper front fascia, diffuser for the rear, LED mirror indicators and a number of new alloy wheel designs. The interior was also a bit different, with added comfort perks and generally more driver oriented, as the SLK was growing into a more respectable car with every new generation.

The biggest changes, however, came with engines, especially the SLK200 and SLK350 which got significant power boosts and improved fuel efficiency at the same time.

As the styling got better and engines increased power, the SLK was packing more and more safety and tech perks as well. The previous one had basic electric additions, but this one got sat-nav, SD card slot, Bluetooth hands-free, MP3 and iPod connectivity, Linguatronic voice operation system (after the facelift), ABS, 6-speed manual or 7G-Tronic gearboxes, adaptive airbags, alarm, alloy wheels, remote for the audio system, CD, climate control, cruise control, electric heated mirrors, fog lights, PAS, remote locking, service indicators, side airbags, sports seats, traction control and more.

Additional options included things like electric seats, air-con, AMG styling, COMAND, bi-xenons, Homelink, interior lighting pack, THERMOTRONIC, Air Scarf with heated air, leather or wood steering wheel, Parktronic, rain sensors, heated seat, lowered suspension, Sport Package, Harman Kardon sound system, Designo version, handsfree phone, power seats, lumbar support and more.

Lastly, almost all of the optional equipment was standard in models with larger engines, so if you went for an option with a more powerful engine, you would get more perks to go with the power.

    3.5 L V6

Transmission options varied from six-speed manuals to seven-speed automatics in the V8 models as standard, while optionals came with five-speed auto for the SLK 200 and seven-speed automatics for the V6 models instead of the six-speed manuals.

  • MODEL HISTORY

    Model History

In 2004 the R170 was replaced by the all new model for the SLK-Class. The R171 was more aggressive, it offered more equipment, better suspension and handling, longer wheelbase, better materials and gearboxes, fully galvanized body to help deal with rust issues of the R170 and much more. Generally speaking, it was a whole new car and a lot better than the initial SLK-Class and the accolades followed, the R171 being placed in Car and Driver Ten Best list in 2005 and also being the best new convertible in the Canadian Car of the Year.

Initial engine range included a 1.8L with 161hp, 3L V6 with 228hp, 3.5L V6 with 268hp and the SL 55 AMG with 5.4L V8 with 355hp. The SLK 55 AMG Black Series came in 2006 boosting the power to 400hp and reducing weight for the acceleration to 60 in just 4.3s and to 125 mph in just 15.5s, which was 2 seconds quicker than in the regular SLK 55 AMG.

The facelift came in 2008, bringing a more aggressive look and several new engines. The power of the 1.8L engine rose to 181hp, the 3L remained the same, but the 3.5L got 305hp, which was significantly more. Furthermore, styling and updated engines were not the only additions, since the facelifted model had 650 all new parts, including a number of safety and comfort equipment that became standard with the revamp and an incredible number of new optional tech perks which came from more upscale models such as the SL-Class and the flagship S-Class.

The R171 was replaced by the R172 in 2011.
