  • MODEL HISTORY

    Model History

Looking to regain ground lost to the cross cutting measures taken on the W203, the completely new W204 Mercedes C-Class saloon once again offered buyers that traditional Benz (i.e. solid) feel. The build quality and materials used in the W204, far surpassed that of the previous generation. The body structure was made from a combination of high-strength steel and ultra-high strength steel, resulting in a lightweight, yet supremely rigid car. This improved handling response, as did the newly standard Agility Control suspension. Depending on driving conditions, the new suspension’s hydro mechanical shock absorbers can automatically adjust themselves to provide a smooth ride when the car is cruising in a straight line. But turn the steering wheel, and they will automatically firm up to reduce body roll and improve cornering stability. This gives the new W204 C-Class saloon that traditional Mercedes smooth ride when you want it, and confident handling when you need it.

The exterior of the W204 Mercedes C-Class was given a distinctive, chiselled look. Luxury themed models (like the Elegance) wore a traditional chrome grille with the Mercedes star hood ornament at the edge of the bonnet. Sport models received a more aggressive exterior treatment, with a bold three-pointed star smack in the middle of the grille. And at the rear, all the new Mercedes C-Class saloons got striking LED tail lamps that automatically flash under hard braking. According to the Mercedes R&D department, flashing lights cause drivers to react 0.2 seconds quicker at speeds above 70 mph.

Unlike the previous generation, the cabin of the new W204 Mercedes C-Class felt as solid as a 12th century castle. All of the plastics and trim felt delightfully expensive to the touch, which gives you the sense that this car will indeed hold together like an old castle. But it isn’t draughty, and the thrones are actually comfortable on long journeys (to survey your kingdom). There’s also a lot of standard (and optional) toys for your highness to play with. And if you ever need to go to war, the (completely bonkers) Mercedes C63 AMG puts 457 angry steeds at your disposal.

The range of engines in the 2008 – 2014 Mercedes C-Class offers something for everyone. The base petrol and diesel engines provide exceptional fuel economy and emissions, which can save you lots of money on that tax disk. After 2011, superchargers (Kompressor models) were replaced with more modern turbochargers, which resulted in more power, and even better economy / emissions.
