V6 Petrol Engines – It’s common for the V6 engines fitted to the W203 C-Class Coupé to develop timing chain sprocket issues.

Plastic Headlamp Lenses – Previous generations of the Mercedes C-Class were fitted with glass headlamp lenses that would last the life of the car. However, cost cutting measures prompted Mercedes to start using plastic headlamp lenses on the W203. Over time, these lenses will dull and yellow, reducing the effectiveness of the headlamps and make this otherwise smart looking car look worn and cheap.

  • MODEL HISTORY

    Model History

Nothing says “young & hip” like a sporty 2-door coupé. This was the image that Mercedes had to project in order to attract the young professionals that had been flocking to the new compact BMW 3-Series coupé. To that end, Mercedes engineers modified the RWD C-Class chassis, then fitted it with a selection of perky engines and a suave 2-door body. Mercedes estimated that 65% of its UK W203 C-Class Sport Coupé customers would be first time Benz buyers. So this new “youthful” model had to be good.

Riding on the same wheelbase as the W203 saloon and estate, the Mercedes CL203 Sport Coupé is 178 mm shorter than both. This made for a light, nimble coupe that was easy to manoeuvre and park on Sloane Street. Assuming that you’d be there to shop, the CL203’s lift-back design allows for a commodious boot. And that black panel beneath the (functional) rear wing is actually tinted glass that makes reversing a breeze. This is definitely a feature that many modern vehicles could use.

Although the gasoline 4-cylinder engines provided adequate performance, Mercedes did give the CL 203 Sport Coupé two genuine performance variants. The 2004 – 2007 Mercedes C30 CDI AMG packed 540 NM of diesel torque, and could hustle 0-100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds. The petrol powered 2004 – 2007 Mercedes C32 AMG got 349 bhp, and it could hit 100 km/h in a mere 5.2 seconds. But even if you got a lesser model, the Mercedes C-Class Sport Coupé was still a Benz. And driving one will make anybody feel special.
