The current version of the SLK-Class, internally called R172, replaced the previous model in 2011. Compared to it, the R172 was far more modern and packed with luxury and comfort features which were common for the more upmarket models in the lineup at the time of its release. They vary from Magic Sky, to Brake Assist, Pre-Safe, Active Bonnet and Attention Assist, to various convertible features such as hot air for the neck which is familiar from the plusher SL-Class.
Some things haven’t changed, though. The R172 is still a RWD, two-door, hard top roadster available with 7-speed, or 9-speed (a new option) automatics, or a 6-speed manual. Also, the R172 is the first SLK offered with a diesel engine. Engines range from a 1.8 l I4 all the way up to 5.5 l V8 for the AMG version, including several more I4s (including the mentioned 2.1 l diesel) and a 3.5 l V6 petrol.
There has been no facelift so far, which is understandable in spite of the production age. The R172 is packed with the latest tech perks and has proved to be incredibly reliable.
Trim Lines & Engines
The standard one is already more than sufficient, including features like alloy wheels, ABS, alarm, LED lights, cruise control, driver’s and passenger’s airbag, electric heated mirrors, 5.8” screen, side airbags, remote locking, sports seats, traction control, Attention Assist, Active Bonnet, Pre-Safe, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, DAB, Vario-roof, stop/start and the amazing Magic Sky Control which allows you to control colour and opacity of the roof.
Optional features add loads of styling features, including AMG solutions, different materials and even more safety systems such as Brake Assist Plus, Dynamic Handling package, Speed Limit Assist, Pre-Safe Brake that goes with Distronic Plus and Intelligent Light System.
Many of the features are available in higher-level models such as the S-Class, or SL-Class.
Furthermore, there are additional models such as AMG Sport, AMG Sport Edition 125 and CarbonLOOK Edition all of which include lots of unique styling features as standard.

The car is offered with three transmission options. There are two automatics – with seven or nine speeds – and a single manual with six speeds.
The R172 is the third generation of the SLK-Class Mercedes-Benz, which went into production in 2011. In terms of design, it was more aggressive and more modern than its predecessor, including features reminiscent of the exclusive Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. On the other hand, it also pays homage to the 190 SL from the middle of the previous century.
At the time of its launch in 2011 the R172 was offered with three engines – two 1.8 l petrol units with 184 and 204 hp – and a 3.5 l V6 with 306 horsepower.
Five months after the initial release AMG offered their take on the SLK. It came with a 5.5 l V8, boasting 422 horsepower, which is significantly more than any of its competitors. It allows the car to sprint to 62 miles an hour in just 4.6 seconds. However, despite the sheer power, the SLK 55 AMG also offers luxury and high-quality materials as well as a huge number of high tech safety systems.
The first ever diesel in an SLK came at the same time in the form of the SLK 250 CDI. It is powered by a 2.1 l common-rail diesel engine with 204 horsepower. This gave the car 500 Nm of torque and the best fuel efficiency of all the models.
