Brake pads – they can start squeal during soft braking. The problem is easily solved by replacing pads and many have been replaced under warranty
No recalls to report. Please let us know if one has come out we have not shown
The R231 came in 2013 as a replacement for the R230, proudly continuing the SL-Class tradition of representing upmarket two-door RWD roadsters in the Mercedes-Benz line up. The engine range still includes V6s, V8s and a V12 and the transmission is the 7-speed auto for all engines. Moreover, there are no diesel options for the R231.
There has been no facelift so far, but one is to be expected, having in mind the general Mercedes-Benz dealings.
All of the options are packed with loads of equipment and comfort features. Leather seats, soft and high-quality materials, brushed aluminium, loads of space for the driver and passenger and a surprising 364 l of boot space with the roof DOWN.
The only novelty during its production span so far has been the change from the SL350 to SL400 which occurred in 2014. It brought more power, better acceleration and better fuel efficiency.
Trim Lines & Engines
The R231 is packed with tech features, many of which have been present in the flagship S-Class of the era – the W221. Some of the all new features include the smart windscreen washers which adjust the level of spray automatically and also sprays only during downward motion, which is very useful for a roadster. Another new feature is the Frontbass sound system.
All models include as standard things like climate control, electric leather seats, GPS, MP3 connectivity, plethora of electronic safety systems, DVD, electric mirrors, headlights washers, lumbar support, side airbags, PAS, adjustable steering wheel, traction control, torque vectoring brakes, Active Body Control with adaptive braking system, ADAPTIVE BRAKE, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, ATTENTION ASSIST, DISTRONIC PLUS, NECK-PRO, PRE-SAFE, active bonnet, lane keeping assist, LED headlamps with Intelligent Light System, parking assist, blind spot assist, backup camera and much, much more.
The car is already pretty packed with features, but there are optional ones, as well. For example, you can opt for Magic Sky Control with which you can tint the panoramic roof.
3.0 L 333 PS (245 kW) V6
3.5 L 306 PS (225 kW) V6
4.7 L 435 PS (320 kW) V8 Biturbo
5.5 L 537 PS (395 kW) V8 Biturbo
6.0 L 630 PS (460 kW) V12 Biturbo
All of the engines are paired with a seven-speed automatic 7G-Tronic transmission. AMG models have the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT with seven speeds as well.
The R231 was introduced in 2012 and there has been no facelift so far, so there is not much history of the particular model. On the other hand, it continues the line of the SL-Class models, being an extremely valuable addition. It was always expected that a newer model would be more powerful than the previous one and that it would pack loads of technological innovations, but these innovations are also what makes cars less reliable. However, the R231 seems pretty bulletproof. The previous versions were pretty reliable, but they also had their problems which would often turn out to be rather expensive to repair, having in mind the high class of the car. The R231 has been a lot better in this respect during the first three years of production.
The only change happened in 2014 when the least powerful 3.5 l V6 from the SL350 was discontinued. The replacement came in the form of the SL400 which, despite its name, actually had 500 ccm fewer, but brought more power, a lot more torque and better fuel efficiency.
