COMAND – just like many other cars from this era, the W221 also might have a problem with accepting full UK postcodes for satellite navigation. However, the problem is easily dealt with via a simple software upgrade.
V6 petrol engines – these may have an issue regarding premature wear of timing chain sprocket for balancer shaft, which is by no means a cheap repair.
Fuel filter assembly – diesel engines might have a problem with leaking fuel at the fuel filter assembly. This was a subject of a recall, so most of them should have been replaced by now.
No recalls to report. Please let us know if one has come out we have not shown
The W221 is a full-size luxury car produced by Mercedes-Benz from 2006 to 2013. It replaced the previous model and brought significant changes in styling and technology and moved the car further towards the famed Mercedes-Benz build quality. The car had short wheelbase and long wheelbase versions, as well as several special models like Guard and Pullman. Understandably, AMG models were also present, going all the way up to 12 cylinders, but there was also a four-cylinder 250 CDI diesel model which was the first one of its kind in an S-Class, as well as another first – a HYBRID – making this the flagship model with the widest range of engine options in history.
A major revamp came in 2009 and it brought several improvements in engineering, comfort, safety and technology. Some of the engines were revised as well, improving fuel efficiency and lowering emissions, while safety features were severely based on camera and radar assistance systems.
The car at the very top of the range was the S600 with the V12 twin turbo engine producing 517 horsepower and reaching 60 miles an hour in 4.4 seconds. Expectedly, AMG models surpassed this with the S63 AMG having 525 horsepower coming from a 6.2 l V8 and the S65 AMG leading the way with 612 horsepower coming from a 6 l V12.

The S600 Pullman Guard came in 2008.
In 2009 a major facelift occurred. It brought a large number of further improvements in fuel efficiency, power, comfort and safety. For example, some of the new safety features are Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Night View Assist PLUS, ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection function and automatic crosswind stabilisation.
Generally speaking the W221 moved the S-Class a lot closer to what it represented until the late 1990s. It was the most serious contender for the best car of the world title, introducing a number of innovations on all fields, as well as significantly improving the existing features giving them more functionality and reliability.
