Rust -Although it is not an awfully common problem for the W220, it is not negligibly rare either. Some of these cars would rust badly, while others look perfect even now. This means that, after a decade and a half, it should be easy to see if a particular car has a problem with rust. If it is good now, there is small chance of it becoming a major problem in this respect.
I6 320CDI – This older version of the six-cylinder diesel was more economical than its later V6 counterpart, but it also had several problems, such as failing engine mounts, oil light false alarms, failing injectors and fire seals failure which could lead to injectors getting stuck in the cylinder head, requiring the head replacement, which is a pricey repair.
Airmatic – This amazing technology made the already incredibly comfortable car even more so, but should air pump, or air struts fail, repair costs might be incredibly high.
Drains – Drains need to be kept clean, since water can overflow and cause problems with vent blower motor and wiring loom. This can cause serious problems with electrics. Furthermore, all electrics in this car should be checked, because it was packed with hi-tech features, many of which may fail after a decade and a half.

The W220 is a full-size, four-door sedan generally made as a short-wheelbase, or a long-wheelbase model, but with several special edition cars as well. Drive was either RWD, or AWD and engines ranged from six-cylinder and eight-cylinder for the diesels, or from six-cylinder to V12 for petrols.
The first major facelift came in 2002 with sleeker front with transparent headlights and a different grille and new taillights, but it also fixed several issues with the electrics, greatly improving the COMAND system for example.
The car featured a number of changes during its six-year lifespan. Apart from adding new engines and AMG models, including the S65 AMG with a V12 producing 604 hp. This was the first car with steering wheel shifters. Seven-speed automatic transmission arrived in late 2003 and it was standard for models with bigger engines.

Equipment for the W220 was incredible. Just some of the things that standard equipment included were Airmatic, COMAND system, keyless entry, ABS, traction control, adjustable steering wheel, side and front air bags, remote locking, self-closing doors and trunk, Active Cylinder Control (for S500 and S600), Pre-Safe system, ESP, four electric windows, PAS, metallic paint, front electrics seats with lumbar support, leather seats, electric heat mirrors, cruise control, air conditioning, remote for the audio, alloy wheels and so on. Mind you, this was on all models, regardless of the engine choice.
On the other hand, optional equipment included so much more. You could get AWD, Distronic, rain and light sensors, Parktronic, Active Ventilated Seats, BOSE sound system, Timeport with voice control, special materials for the interior and various colour patterns, DVD, Isofix, parking sensors, sport seats, telephone, TV and more.
Moreover, vast majority of optional features was actually standard with more upmarket models with V8, or V12 engines, while majority of it could be ordered with even the smallest engines.

There were two transmission options. The first one was a five-speed automatic, while in late 2003 a seven-speed 7G-Tronic came.
The W220 came in 1998 as a replacement for the W140. It was very difficult and incredibly expensive to surpass the previous model with sheer build quality and engineering, especially having in mind a large number of new electronic features, as well as completely new Common Rail technology. This is why Mercedes turned more to design and technological innovations well ahead of their time.
The S65 AMG came in 2002, having a V8 engine with 493 horsepower and 515lb ft torque. The same year saw the best S600 V12 to date with the same amount of power as the AMG model, but with significantly more torque. Furthermore, it was tuned for comfort rather than sheer sporting capabilities, although it could reach 60 miles an hour in just 4.5 seconds. The last thing that came in 2002 was the Pre-Safe system which became standard on all S-Class models.
In 2003 AMG responded with their own V12 model with 604 horsepower and torque that had to be electronically limited to 738 lb-ft. This beast reached 60 in just 4 seconds and 125 mph in only 13.3 seconds. In December 2003 the seven-speed gearbox came.
