The W164 M-Class is a mid-size luxury SUV made from 2005 – 2011. There is only one body option and it lacks a 7-seat feature that some of its competitors offer. However, the W164 is remarkable to drive, very comfortable and reliable with huge road presence and surprisingly good off-road credentials, having in mind that it is a luxury car before anything else.
The facelift came only three years later, offering several design changes – such as new front fascia, mirrors, wheels, grille and interior design – as well as numerous minor fixes and several new models, such as the 420 CDI.
In 2009 the Bluetec Diesels were introduced, as well as the ML 450 Hybrid.

The W164 came after six years of development to replace the first M-Class model – the W163. It was first presented at the North American International Auto Show and it brought numerous improvements compared to the initial model. It was longer, more comfortable, it featured loads of new perks and it had lower coefficient of drag, making it more efficient in absolutely every department.
The first change came with the unibody type, instead of the previous generation’s body on frame. Other additions included a new automatic transmission with seven speeds, Active Curve-Illuminating Bi-Xenon headlights, air suspension with height adjustment and Off-Road Pro package for better performance off the beaten track.
The W164 was an instant success, being a better version of the car that was beloved but somewhat lacking. It was chosen to be the “Best New Sport Utility Vehicle” in 2006 for the Canadian Car of the Year awards.
In 2007 the AMG model arrived. It was the M63 AMG with a 6.2 l V8 packing 510 hp and reaching 62 mph in less than 5 seconds, which was almost unthinkable for a car of its size and shape.
The facelift came in 2008 and it brought several styling changes and technical mods, as well as new engines and nomenclature.
Lastly, in 2009, several new options also appeared. First of all, modern Bluetec Diesels appeared and they brought vast improvements in fuel efficiency and power ratings to the already amazing diesel engine lineup.
The first ML 450 Hybrid came in 2009. It was a true work of technological wonder, boasting 335 hp, almost as much as the ML550, but at the same time, consuming far less fuel.
