21” tires – driving on these can be less rewarding in terms of comfort and they do wear faster. However, these are very rear, most GLs featuring smaller and more suitable wheels.

The second generation of the flagship SUV, internally dubbed X166, brought numerous improvements to a car that was already top notch in its class. It got more perks, additional standard features, it grew bigger and more luxurious, while losing significant amount of weight and reducing fuel consumption.
It is still a seven-seat full-sized SUV designed to compete with its US counterparts, while still preserving unprecedented European flair and attention to detail and high-quality finish Mercedes-Benz has been known for. Similarly, it is a capable off-road car, not designed to take you far off the beaten track, but still good enough to deal with adverse weather conditions and asphalt-lacking terrains.
Just like its predecessor, the X166 also won the Motor Trend SUV of the year in 2013.
Aside from the pretty ample standard equipment even in the base model, the X166 GL-Class also offers several different styling and comfort packages that can make any particular car specially tailored to the owner’s desires.
Trim Lines & Engines
Standard equipment came with the base engine, but it is far from lacking. It includes things like ATTENTION ASSIST, 9 airbags, DAB radio, ISOFIX on outer middle-row seats and both third row seats, COMAND online system, Bluetooth connectivity, Crosswind Assist, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, Active Bonnet for pedestrian protection, AIRMATIC self-leveling suspension, and electric tailgate.
Going for the more powerful GL500 model adds Active Parking Assist, Intelligent Light System, KEYLESS-GO and memory multicontour seats for the front to the standard features.
Top of the lineup is reserved for the GL 63 AMG which is powered by a 5.5 l bi-turbo V8 which gives it 557 hp for the 0-62 run of just under 5 seconds, which is almost unbelievable for a car of its size and weight. The GL 63 AMG sports a number of special AMG features such as the engine, transmission with three modes, AMG RIDE CONTROL, AIRMATIC active suspension which automatically lowers the car as the speed increases and ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM. On the inside the GL 63 AMG also has a number of befitting perks including perforated brakes, AMG floor mats and ARTICO leather seats.
Optional features include the following:
On- & Off-Road Package has a number of perks that help with off-road driving. These include things like automatic electronic assists with manual override functions, but also things like protective panels for the underbody.
Active Curve System improves grip while cornering harder in order to improve efficiency and safety.
Other optional features are three-part panoramic glass sunroof, additional Artico leather on the inside, heated rear seats, multi-colour interior lighting, heated and cooled cupholders and massaging front seats.
The first production GL-Class ever was made in 2006 and it became an instant hit, immediately taking the leading role in this class of high-quality full-size SUVs. It offered loads of equipment as standard, but also plenty more as optional and came for the top price compared to other SUVs from Mercedes-Benz. It was the ultimate family car.
The second generation came in 2012, three years after a major revamp of the previous version and it only improved the car further, adding loads of perks as standard equipment and further improving the engines in terms of power and efficiency. Despite being bigger, longer, more spacious, more powerful and overally more efficient, the new model was actually more than 220 lb lighter.
Up until now there has not been a facelift of the car, but it a general practise of Mercedes-Benz to introduce one after a few years, so one might be expected. Additionally, a change in class nomenclature for Mercedes SUVs brings a name change for the GL as well – it is a GLS now, mimicking the S-Class flagship placement for the SUV world – so, we might expect the GLS to bear some difference from the current GL.
