When Mercedes announced the addition of a 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 version of its already brutal SUV at the New York Motor Show earlier this year, it set pulses racing among motoring journalists. When they added that there would also be an S version available boasting more than 500 bhp, many of them almost fainted.

Since then, we have been waiting with bated breath for the arrival of Stuttgart’s most monstrous machine yet to arrive on these shores, and to find out just how much such a remarkable machine will cost. The news that prices have now been announced in Australia gives us the first clue.

Aussie launch

The GLC63S will launch at the end of the year, priced at AU$165,000 (approximately £100,000) for the SUV and AU$172,000 (around £105,000) for the coupe.

Given that retail prices in Australia are typically around 30 per cent higher than in the UK, this suggests that prices here are likely to be in the £70,000 region.

About the GLC63 S

The range-topping hot SUV is a genuine rival to the Porsche, even without the extra boost provided by the S goodies. With them, Porsche’s offering will be left standing, even when it comes with the additional performance package. And when you consider that this will set you back £69,500, it suggests that the Mercedes is priced extremely competitively.

While an official 0-60 time has yet to be confirmed, the figure of 3.8 seconds has been strongly suggested – the fastest Porsche offering manages 4.4 seconds. The top speed will be electronically limited to 155mph.

For those who love their extras, Mercedes will be offering some additional goodies in the special packages. The exterior carbon package provides carbon fibre mirror housings and spoiler, while the ceramic braking system offers stopping power that is out of this world.
