    Model Types

The Mercedes-Benz X164 GL-Class is the first generation of the full-size luxury SUV. It is a proper seven-seater with three rows of seats and it is the flagship model of Mercedes-Benz in the SUV category. Having this in mind, it is no wonder that it packs loads of luxury and safety features, many of which can be found in the general flagship model of the company – the S-Class. Indeed, for the SUV world, the GL might be considered the S-Class’s counterpart.

Its main feature, apart from the roomy and comfortable interior and immense road presence, is its unprecedented off-road capability for a car of its class. It can’t really match the G-Class, for example, but it is a capable off-roader, while being far more appropriate for road driving and highway cruising. The GL-Class is basically a bigger, more comfortable and luxurious M-Class.

Its merits were proven a year after it came out, since it won the 2007 Motor Trend SUV of the Year in a tough competition.

A facelift occurred in 2009. Apart from minor styling changes, it introduced two new diesel engines for the GL350 and the GL450 and also a Sport trim package which increased the luxury and made some features, such as headlight washers and heated seats, standard.

Moreover, there are loads of optional extra packages which add comfort, styling and other perks to the already amazing car.

    Trim Lines & Engines

“Flagship” in Mercedes really means that. Standard features of the GL-Class included things like dual-zone air-con, auto dimming mirrors, Artico leather, tilt/telescopic leather multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, Parktronic sensors heated front seats and, after the facelift, new daytime lights, LED taillights, Airmatic suspension and chrome details, to name but a few.

Moreover, the bigger the engine, the more standard features you get, so the GL500, for example, has standard Nappa leather upholstery, heated rear seats, xenons and Easy-Pack automatic tailgate.

Optional features go even further. There are several packages that add loads of perks and a number of standalone additions such as 20”, or 21” wheels, ambient lighting, ventilated seats, DAB radio, TV tuner, surround system, rear seat entertainment system, blind spot assist, radar-guided cruise control and much, much more.

Sports Styling Package brings Bi-xenon headlights, 20” wheels, chrome roof bars and privacy glass.

Luxury Seat Package adds two-tone leather, memory system with three settings for the incredibly versatile multi-contour front seats. If you spend a lot of time in this car, you will need and love this package.

    Model History

The first X164 GL-Class was produced in 2006. It came to top the M-Class and offer unprecedented luxury for an SUV, while still letting the owner deal with adverse road conditions and rarely beaten tracks. It was also presented to aide Mercedes-Benz’s efforts in the USA (vast majority of them are made in Alabama, USA) where these kinds of cars are very popular. It was immediately separated from the competitors, what with its unibody architecture and sleek styling even for a car of this size and the unprecedented build quality Mercedes is known by.

The car was packed with luxury features, many of which mimic the range-topping S-Class. It also gave seven seats, all suitable for adults, and more storage space than the Range Rover offers. At the time it appeared, the GL-Class was top notch in every respect.

The only facelift came in 2009, and it brought only several changes. There were two new diesel engines and some optional features became standard.
