  • MODEL HISTORY

    Model History

When the W208 Mercedes CLK was born in 1997, the world was a much different place. We said goodbye to Princess Diana, hello to Tony Blair, and a sheep named Dolly had become a celebrity. Most people didn’t know what a ‘dot com’ was, but that incomprehensible technical jargon was about to make a lot of people rich. And Mercedes had just the car for them.

Prior to the W208 CLK, Mercedes Coupés offered all the excitement of afternoon tea with the local garden club. Everything was designed with a straight-edge ruler and their engines provided about as much fun as drawing circles with that straight-edged ruler. Then Mercedes offered a 2+2 coupé with actual curves and powerful engines. Had the world suddenly gone mad?

Based on the W210 E-Class, Mercedes’ new mid-size executive coupé featured the familiar quad-oval headlamp found on the E-Class saloon and a sloping roofline that made it look good coming or going. Power plants ranged from a very slow 2.0L petrol to a very fast AMG-built 5.4L V8. Most buyers however, are likely to opt for either the C208 Mercedes CLK320, or the C208 Mercedes CLK430, as both offer the optimum blend of performance and Germanic refinement.

At the time the C208 Mercedes CLK was designed, Mercedes was switching from their legendary over-engineered philosophy, to a more profitable mass-production model. As a result, this generation CLK can age poorly as the miles rack up. But if you hold out for a well-maintained example, you’ll be treated to a traditional Mercedes coupé that still looks good today.
