  • MODEL HISTORY

    Model History

Nothing says “you’ve arrived” quite like a big Mercedes-Benz. They have an undeniable presence, and their S-Class coupés announce your importance without saying a word. The C215 Mercedes CL-Class was the marque’s most elegant and technically advanced wealth-expression tool to date. It offered cutting-edge features and jaw-dropping performance, wrapped in bodywork that looked good from any angle. At a time when internet millionaires were being minted every minute, the Mercedes CL offered the perfect way to announce your good fortune.

Arriving just in time for the new millennium, the Mercedes CL500 and Mercedes CL600 showcased everything that MB could do at the time. It was constructed using lots of weigh-saving materials like aluminium and magnesium, which made it 340kg less than its predecessor (the Mercedes C140). These weight savings were then utilized by the new Active Body Control suspension to make this big luxury coupé simply dance through the curves. The complex hydraulic system would instantly adjust itself to keep the body almost completely level as the car turned. In AMG models, the ABC system was further calibrated for maximum grip. And when you combined that with the optional carbon-ceramic brakes (the Mercedes CL was the first serial production car to offer such a feature), you had a big grand touring car that could out-run (the bi-turbo Mercedes CL65 AMG could hit 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds) a Ferrari 456, and actually keep up with it in the curves.

On the safety front, the Mercedes CL-Class C215 came equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety kit, including electronic brake assist, stability control, bi-xenon headlamps (for both high and low beams) with a wash/wiper system, side airbags, window airbags, and two-stage front airbags (2003>) that use bumper and front-seat sensors to vary the deployment force based on crash severity and the size/weight of the front seat passengers. And speaking of the front seats, buyers could option them with active cooling (heat and memory came standard), and sumptuous Nappa leather upholstery. Other options included keyless ignition, and Designo interior packages with actual granite stone trim (0.6-0.8 mm thick).
