  • MODEL HISTORY

    Model History

Launched halfway through the W204 C-Class’ life, the C204 Mercedes C-Class Coupé is a sophisticated alternative to the uber-popular BMW 3-Series Coupé. It used elegant lines to attract the eye and brilliant German engineering to satisfy the soul. The low-slung body sits 41mm lower than the W204 Mercedes C-Class saloon, and the short front and rear overhangs make the C-Class Coupe easy to place on the road. Beneath that elegant bodywork sits a modified version of the W207 E-Class chassis. It’s suspended by an active damper system that automatically adjusts the firmness of each damper based on how the car is being driven. This makes for a comfortable ride when you’re just bumbling down to the shops, and for precision reflexes when you’re carving up a B-road.

Standard kit on the C204 Mercedes C-Class Coupé includes an AMG body kit that included sculpted sill extensions, an aggressive front valance, racy 18-inch AMG wheels, a sport suspension, speed-sensitive power steering, deeply bolstered front bucket seats and a flat-bottomed AMG steering wheel that comes with paddle shifters if you choose the automatic. There was also an optional panoramic glass roof, adding even more opulence to this already luxurious Mercedes Coupé.

The C204 Mercedes C-Class Coupé is available with a pair of turbo diesel engines, a pair of turbocharged four cylinder petrol engines and a 306 bhp 3.5L petrol V6 that can launch the Mercedes C-Class Coupé to 100 kph in just 5.9 seconds. The standard gearbox with the petrol engines is the 7 speed automatic, while diesel variants get a six-speed manual as standard. All engines received the BlueEFFICIENCY label, highlighting their superior fuel economy and emissions.

    Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe

Years ago, a couple of Mercedes engineers decided to turn a Mercedes 300SEL 6.3, into a full-blown race car. They bored the car’s 6.3L M100 V8 out to 6.8 litres, then turned the body into a lightweight, wide-body racer. This 428-hp “Red Monster” then won 1st in class at the 1971 24-hours of Spa-Francorchamps, and placed 2nd overall. The little Afalterbach-based tuning company had just burst into the scene, and the letters AMG would forever be associated with jaw-dropping performance.

Decades later, AMG became a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes Benz, and it’s maniacal creations competed directly with those rickshaws from BMW’s M, & Audi’s RS divisions. The C204 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupé was a velvet-wrapped sledgehammer that delivers 451 bhp from its hand built 6.2 litre V8. And while it’s 6.3 name and badges are intended to honour the legendary Mercedes 300SEL 6.3, calling an apple a plum makes about as much sense as BMW’s 321 xWalk45i nomenclature.

Silly name aside, the C204 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupé is an amazing machine that’s capable of extraordinary feats. It can rocket to 100 km/h in about 4.5 seconds, then onto a governed top speed of 155 mph / 250 kph. If your C63 is fitted with the AMG Performance Pack, the speed limiter will be removed, allowing you to hit 186 mph / 299 kph. And you can reign in all those angry German steeds with the C204 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupé’s standard cross-drilled brake rotors and 6-piston callipers. There was also an exciting variant called the Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe Edition 507. This insane coupé produced 507 horsepower and had an even more aggressive version of the sticky AMG suspension. And there was even a special track day version (Mercedes C63 AMG Coupé Black Series) that came with 510 bhp and an optional aero pack. But no matter what version you choose, the C204 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupé will turn any drive into an event.
