Plastic Headlamp Lenses – Previous generations of the Mercedes C-Class were fitted with glass headlamp lenses that would last the life of the car. However, cost cutting measures prompted Mercedes to start using plastic headlamp lenses on the W203. Over time, these lenses will dull and yellow, reducing the effectiveness of the headlamps, and make this otherwise smart looking car look worn and cheap.

  • MODEL HISTORY

    Model History

As you might expect from such an innovative company, Mercedes-Benz began developing the all-new W203 C-Class, just two years after introducing the previous generation W202 C-Class. Mercedes’ £2.5 billion investment resulted in a sporty compact executive saloon that would appeal to a younger audience. Several sport versions were offered, and a mid-cycle refresh brought this prestige saloon up to the level of its more expensive stablemates.

Among the many innovations of the W203 Mercedes C-Class were front crash boxes formed from high-strength steel. In a crash, these highly advanced crumple zones would absorb energy to protect the occupants, then they could be replaced at a reasonably low cost. Adaptive front airbags could sense the weight of the front passengers, then adjust the deployment force to better protect them in a frontal collision. Side window bags were also included in the comprehensive C-Class safety kit. For 2004, the suspension, chassis, brakes, and 6-speed automatic transmission programming were updated to reflect Mercedes new Direct Control program. As a result, the driving experience in the W203 Mercedes C-Class was now on-par with competitors in the compact executive saloon segment.

Mercedes’ attention to detail is legendary, and the W203 C-Class won’t disappoint. Thoughtful touches are numerous and include an ink pen holder just inside the glovebox door. Although it may seem trivial, these simple plastic clips will save you time by preventing your “inevitably needed” pen from disappearing at the bottom of the glove box / centre console. And the exciting, powerful AMG models (Mercedes C32 AMG – introduced in 2001 / Mercedes C30 AMG – introduced in 2002) show that Mercedes engineers were even thinking about performance enthusiasts.
